img_0032Carla Babb is the award-winning Pentagon correspondent for VOA News. She has reported from across the globe with datelines from Kabul to Ouagadougou, embedding with U.S. forces and questioning senior defense leaders from Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She recently conducted the first one-on-one interview with the commander of U.S. Southern Command, Navy Admiral Craig Faller, about the military’s drug interdiction efforts and the situation in Venezuela.

Babb joined VOA News in 2008. Prior to her current post, Babb was a general assignment reporter and a fill-in reporter at VOA’s White House and State Department bureaus. She also anchored VOA’s flagship Learning English Television, which teaches English to millions worldwide.

When she’s not chasing down a story, Babb enjoys supporting military and veterans volunteer groups. She is a founding member of the USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore’s Young Professionals Committee and has served for two year as Master of Ceremony for the Vets on Track Foundation’s annual gala.

Babb won the AP Chesapeake Broadcaster’s Association 2018 Outstanding Specialty Reporting award for her national security coverage and 2016 Outstanding News Series award for her reporting on the Air Force’s shortage of fighter pilots and maintainers. Her reporting and producing also has won a Public Service Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, along with national and regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Babb earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and bachelor’s degrees in political science and communications from North Carolina State University. She was Valedictorian, Senior Class President, Outstanding Woman of the Year and a member of the Track & Field team while at NC State.

Babb also studied British politics at the University of Oxford, St. Benet’s Hall, and received a U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship to attend Jordan University’s Advanced Arabic Program in Amman.

The former ACC student athlete is frequently playing sports or talking about them. Babb has anchored VOA’s March Madness segments, served as a panelist for VOA’s World Cup segments and shared her Fantasy football expertise for a local Washington Redskins show. Her VOA colleagues say she has a fierce competitive streak when playing other media outlets on the softball diamond.
